Bridge construction work begins in Nimroz and 36 projects have been completed in Kunar
Afghanistan’s official news agency (Bakhtar) reported yesterday that a bridge (120 meters in length & 2 meters wide) will be constructed in the southern province of Nimroz. Once this bridge is completed, it will resolve transportation issues for 10,000 families. The project is being financed by Belgium.
The same news agency also reported that 36 “National Solidarity Program Projects” have been completed in the Sheagal district of Kunar province. Kunar is in northeastern Afghanistan. These projects included such things as the building of a protection wall, digging of potable water wells, asphalting of the roads, construction of power stations, and cleaning of canals and streams.

President Karzai: Afghan geological reserves worth a trillion dollars
Afghan President Hamid Karzai told reporters today that Afghanistan is sitting on mineral and petroleum reserves worth an estimated one trillion dollars! President Karzai further stated that Afghanistan could become one of the richest nations if these resources are adequately tapped. President Karzai said this is based on a survey being carried out by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which is due to be completed in a couple of months. In 2007, Chinese Metallurgical Group Corporation (MCC) signed a three-billion-dollar contract with the Afghan government to develop the Aynak copper mine, which is one of the world’s biggest copper mines.

Afghanistan Picks Up a Bronze Medal in Judo!
In the 2010 South Asian Games currently being held in Bangladesh, Afghan martial artist, Mohammad Tawfiq won a bronze medal in judo in the Under 90 KG group. In recent years, Afghanistan has clearly established itself as a dominant force in the martial arts. The South Asian Games is a major multi-sport event. It began on January 29th and is schedule to run to February 8th. A total of 8 countries are participating in the event and this is the second time that Afghanistan is participating. Little-Known Bird Found Breeding In Afghanistan
A little bird dubbed by scientists as “the world’s least-known bird species” was found breeding in the remote, peaceful Wakhan Corridor in northeastern Afghanistan. This area also supports a wide range of large mammal species, including the Marco Polo sheep (Ovis ammon polii), the Siberian ibex (Capra ibex sibericus), the lynx (Lynx lynx), and the snow leopard (Uncia uncia). Afghanistan Sports Committee for the Deaf
Early this week, the head of Afghanistan’s National Olympic Committee (NOC), Gen. Muhammad Zahir Aghbar announced the formation of the first ever Afghanistan Sports Committee for the Deaf. This committee will works towards encouraging and providing more opportunities for deaf athletes to participate in various sports. The committee is headed by Baktash Nasrat.

Job opportunities for more than 250 in Laghman
UNAMA (United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan) reported today that 3 projects (funded by the Japanese government) have been setup in Laghman province. The projects which include stream and intake construction, will provide job opportunities for more than 250 people.
